Bells Header GIF Bell Tower

The PCC at its meeting on May 22nd 2003 approved the resumption of bellringing. The motion passed was as follows:

"The PCC will now permit the resumption of the ringing of the bells, subject to such periodic measurements as the structural engineer and architect suggest, in order that the PCC can monitor the consequences."

The PCC discussed bellringing at length, and agreed that regular monitoring of any movement of the tower caused by ringing bells was essential. One method of measuring movement had already been agreed with the architect, and this showed only 1mm of movement at the level of the bells, which is no more than would be expected in a stone-built tower. This confirms that the renovation of our wooden tower with additional strengthening has been very successful, but the PCC needs to have early warning of any signs of deterioration.

The tower was officially re-opened on Sunday June 29th 2003, which happened to be St Peter's Day, when we welcomed representatives of the design and building team and civic and diocesan guests. The bells ran out in celebration.  Photo's of the ceremony
