Men's Group Breakfast 13 May 2006

Jonathan Aitken - Our Speaker
Jonathan Aitken - Our Speaker

Ex Tory Minister Jonathan Aitken was the speaker at the Men's Breakfast on May 13th.

His talk was entitled "from Power to Prison to Peace" and it gave a thought provoking insight into his earth shattering fall from grace, from his senior Cabinet Minister's role through divorce, bankruptcy, and eventually to the Old Bailey, to prison life in the tough House Block 3 (Beirut) in HMP Belmarsh.

He explained how he was helped through all this by a Christian man who befriended him and prayed with him regularly before his trial and who helped him to learn more of Christ before his sentencing.

Jonathan also made us aware that not only are some 70% of all prisoners regular drug users but also a large number have never learned to read or write effectively. He was able to help many prisoners by reading letters to them from lawyers or from home and then he was often asked to write replies to help these prisoners in a variety of ways.

This enabled him to get close enough to some inmates to allow him to start, literally, a 'cell group' for men to pray together regularly and to come to know Christ for themselves.

Aitken's talk captivated the 180 men present for 40 minutes and then he answered questions for a while. After that he signed copies of his books as these were sold.

The Men's Group @ St Peter's hold regular breakfasts and other events. All men are most welcome.

Any one interested in coming to future events should contact: Chris Parrott or James Hunt or call 01252 513111.
