St Peter's Church Holiday at Home 2006

Holiday at Home is an extremely popular two day event with lectures, demonstrations, and workshops which runs in August each year using both the Church and the Parish Centre. This years interesting range of topics included:-

John Rugg: Cruise Liners: The Safety You Do Not See
John described what lay behind the glamour and the swish decor of modern cruise ships to ensure passenger safety at all times. He spoke about the strength and stability of these vessels, security and evacuation.

Bill Wright: "History Is All Around Us"
St Peter's Church is easily the oldest building in Farnborough and has seen many changes, though its message has been constant. His presentation included a guided tour, and an opportunity to look more closely at various artefacts in the church and a light-hearted quiz sheet.

Chris Tokeley: "In the Beginning Was Sound"
Chris gave a brief history of recorded sound, with demonstrations of several very old recordings, some over 100 years old, including orchestral, speech, vocal. Some had local associations, some were amusing, others rare, and all were interesting and brought back memories.

Gerry Moss: Medieval Bird Watching
Gerry explained, "Working at home I enjoy watching birds at our feeding station. No doubt some monks in their medieval scriptorium did likewise. Hence in the marginal pictures of manuscripts one often finds birds". Gerry's talk explored the range of birds illustrated, and why they were included. It can be quite a challenge to identify species!

Neil Carlier: The Ultimate Challenge
While in the army, Neil was appointed as the Army Team Captain for ocean yacht racing. He shared his experience of competing in the Round the World Yacht Race in 1973, reliving one leg of the race through video clips taken at the time. His talk combined the fun of sailing with the challenge of facing death during the race and introduced the basis of the Christian Faith which can help to prepare us for the ultimate challenge we all face.

Our thanks to the organisers, all the helpers and to all those who attend this enjoyable event.
